What is artificial insemination in humans?
What is an artificial insemination?
Due to the recent breakthrough in reproduction science, a lot of couples and singles, who couldn’t have their own baby, were given such an opportunity. To one of the widely available reproduction approaches belongs artificial insemination. Artificial insemination is a type of treatment solutions to overcome infertility. It is an intentional process of sperm transfer into woman’s uterus or cervix to attain pregnancy. Unlike ivf and egg donation, this procedure is quite old and was carried out for the first time on human beings in the 19th century. The artificial insemination technique depends on the way of transfer. If it is an intracervical one, the process may not require any medical assistance for insemination. Intracervical insemination (ICI) imitates the natural way of insemination and will be the best solution for healthy women with no menstrual cycle problems who have no male partner. Intrauterine insemination (IUI) does require professional guidance and monitoring.
Generally, it takes place in laboratories of artificial insemination clinics and is a part of assisted reproduction technology, mostly in vitro procedures. This process is far more complicated than the previous one. First, the sperm is purged from chemicals and only after that it is transferred to the woman’s uterus. It not only makes insemination more challenging but also a lot more expensive. The source of sperm may differ as well. The sperm can be produced by a husband or an intended father or by a donor.
What is artificial insemination by a husband?
This type of insemination is good for those couples, where husband’s or partner’s sperm is of good quality but some physical issues prevent him from his wife’s impregnation by means of natural intercourse.
What is artificial insemination by a donor?
This way allows the traditional couples, where the man suffers from severe infertility diseases, and lesbian couples, and single women to conceive their own baby. As a rule, sperm donors are anonymous and their sperm is kept in special sperm bank. The intended parents can choose the best match due to the physical of the donor and medical records.
The number of women, who achieved pregnancy due ICI and IUI, are almost the same. Every fifth woman gets pregnant after the first cycle, and every second after the sixth one. The children, who were born owing to artificial insemination, regardless if they were conceived by donor’s or intended father’s sperm, do not differ from those, who were conceived by means of natural intercourse. They demonstrate the same physical and mental abilities.
