Egg donation affects future fertility
A lot of young women of reproductive age, who are in financial need, consider an egg donation option. In the countries, where it is not banned and can be compensated, it is quite profitable both for in vitro and surrogacy agencies and the donor, since the number of states, where the egg donation is allowed, is limited. This causes the flow of international couples who need their services but are bounded legally in their motherland.
Moreover, egg donation is more socially accepted and isn’t so morally controversial as, for example, surrogacy. Besides monetary payment, an egg donor will get rewarding feeling of psychological satisfaction due to a noble deed. These obvious advantages usually outweigh the disadvantages that this action may cause. But these cons must be taken into account, especially by young girls, who haven’t had their own children yet. And there are some reasons for this.
Can egg donation affect fertility?
Most in vitro and surrogacy clinics have strict demands for their candidates: the potential egg donor must be from 21 to 35 years old and have her own child. And the last requirement is for a reason.
First, it shows her reproductive ability; secondly, it secures the agencies from further litigations with an egg donor in case of side effects. In spite of being a rather safe surgical procedure, the preparation for this may have a severe effect on female reproductive system owing to hormonal therapy. But can egg donation cause infertility and how does egg donation affect future fertility? A seemingly easy operation requires a long-time preparing, that agencies don’t want to spend or repeat. To have as many healthy oocytes as possible, an egg donor goes through hormonal stimulation to speed up the process.
The dose can be too big or the organism can develop a specific reaction to the drug that may result in complications. The most frequent one is ovarian overstimulation syndrome. The symptoms of it are quite unpleasant: bloating, nausea, vomiting, digestion issues, and diarrhea. Besides mild inconveniences this syndrome may lead to ovarian torsion or rupture that not only can cause infertility but endanger patient’s life. One more factor that future egg donors should take into account is hormonal misbalance such a drug treatment can lead to. Of course, hormonal misbalance is not as dangerous as ovarian rupture but does it affect future fertility? Some advanced cases-yes.
But, frankly speaking, each medical procedure involves certain degree of risk and these risks are not the worst. Additionally, theу is not so high percentage of women, who suffered from severe side effects from egg donation. Undoubtedly, the reproductive health is very important for young females and no one can guarantee that it won’t happen but there still more positive in egg donation than negative.
Does egg donation affect future fertility? The predictions should be made for one particular individual, who intends to be a donor. The complications can be caused not only by drugs but by some illnesses, the candidate has had and influenced her physical health. It’s first of all, egg donor’s task to evaluate the pros and cons for herself so as not to pay too high price for negligence.
